Sources: Major update on Middlesbrough bid to sign Hull City star Jacob Greaves

Hull City defender Jacob Greaves has rejected a new contract offer, sources have told Football Insider.

The centre-back, 21, is in the final year of his current deal and the Tigers are keen to tie him down to new terms to ward off interest from Middlesbrough.

The Teesiders are keen on signing Greaves and had an approach knocked back earlier in the window.

Hull are reluctant to lose Greaves, but he has now turned down multiple new contract offers.

Football Insider reported earlier this month (2 August) that Chris Wilder has made the Englishman his top priority as he looks to recruit a new left-sided centre-back.

Tigers manager Shota Arveladze told Hull Live on Monday (8 August) that the club will “spend some time and money” to keep the defender at the MKM Stadium.

Cottingham-born Greaves graduated from the club’s academy and has now made 92 appearances across all competitions.

He did not miss a minute of league action in 2021-22 and was appointed as the club’s new vice-captain this summer.

That has continued into the current season with Hull City unbeaten in their opening two Championship games.

Middlesbrough are in the market for a centre-back after losing Nathan Wood, Grant Hall and Sol Bamba during the off-season.

They have added Darragh Lenihan to their backline this summer but are yet to win this season.

Lenihan was sent off during the 3-2 loss to Queens Park Rangers on Saturday (6 August) and they drew 1-1 wth West Brom on the opening day (30 July).

In other news, Hull City are lining up a bid for a Watford defender.
