Sources: Matheson agrees Wolves contract extension

Luke Matheson agreed a contract extension at Wolves before joining Hamilton Academical on loan, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

This site broke the news yesterday that the teenage defender, 18, was in advanced talks over a new contract.

A Wolves source has told Football Insider that the £1million signing from Rochdale reached an agreement over a new deal before heading to New Douglas Park.

Wolves confirmed Matheson’s move to Hamilton on Thursday (27th August) but did not reveal details of his new contract.

The Midlands giants did not announce the length of his old terms after signing as a 17-year-old from Rochdale.

However, club chiefs were keen to tie him down to a new and improved contract a year-and-a-half after his arrival.

Matheson spent the first half of last season playing for Wolves’ under-23s before joining Ipswich Town on loan in January.

He managed to play just twice for the Tractor Boys as injury and a change of manager limited his game time.

The teenager returned to Molineux and played in the under-23s’ opening two games before joining Hamilton for the season.

He is the second Wolves player to head to Scotland after Austin Samuels joined Aberdeen on loan for the season.

Matheson has played 38 first-team games since breaking into Rochdale’s senior side as a 15-year-old.

He stole headlines in September 2019 when he scored the equaliser in a League Cup tie against Manchester United.

While he is yet to make his competitive debut for Wolves, he has played 14 times for their under-23s.

In other news, Gabby Agbonlahor has made a Wolves relegation prediction after what he’s seen.
