Sources: Middlesbrough agree Matthew Hoppe deal after bid accepted

Middlesbrough have agreed a deal in principle for USA striker Matthew Hoppe, sources have told Football Insider.

The deal will be completed soon after Real Mallorca accepted Boro’s bid for the 21-year-old and gave him the green light to head to Teesside to put pen to paper on a deal.

Hoppe will become Boro’s seventh summer signing and the latest forward capture following the signing of Marcus Forss from Brentford.

The young striker made just one start for La Liga club Mallorca in the 2021-22 campaign after joining from Schalke last summer (2021).

Hoppe burst onto the Bundesliga scene by scoring a hat-trick against Hoffenheim in January 2021 – and went on to notch six goals in 15 starts during the 2020-21 campaign.

However, the USA international has not had the same success in Spain and is now looking for more regular football in order to further his development.

Middlesbrough are desperate for striking reinforcements in the final month of the window as Chris Wilder targets promotion to the Premier League.

Last season’s loan stars Aaron Connolly, Folarin Balogun, and Andraz Sporar all returned to their parent clubs after temporary spells at the Riverside Stadium.

Hoppe, who is under contract at Mallorca until June 2025, has already earned six senior caps for the USA – scoring once.

The 6ft 3in striker now looks set to bolster Boro’s attack, bringing to an end a difficult spell in Spain.

The Teessiders started the new campaign with a 1-1 draw against West Brom last week (30 July).

Wilder’s side face a trip to Queens’ Park Rangers on Saturday (6 August).
