Sources: Middlesbrough set to appoint Michael Carrick as new manager after breakthrough in talks
Michael Carrick is on the verge of being named as the new Middlesbrough manager after a breakthrough in talks, sources have told Football Insider.
The former Manchester United assistant manager, 41, has been in talks with Boro over replacing Chris Wilder for the last few weeks, but the move stalled last week.
However, Boro have moved to resurrect the deal for Carrick who is ready to take his first steps in sole management at the struggling Championship club.

He had a three-game spell in temporary charge of Man United after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked in November 2021.
The former England international guided Man United to two wins and a draw before he ended his 15-year association with the club when Ralf Rangnick was appointed as interim manager.
Carrick spent 12 years as a player at Old Trafford before working under Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer as a coach.
Middlesbrough sacked Wilder earlier this month (3 October) after they won only two of their opening 11 Championship games.
Leo Percovich has been placed in temporary charge but has not been able to oversee a change in fortunes.
They lost 2-1 to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday (15 October) to extend their run to just one win in their last six games.

Boro are down in the relegation zone in the Championship in 22nd place, just a point from safety.
They are next in action on Wednesday (19 October) when they travel to Wigan Athletic.
In other news, Newcastle United are lining up a club-record £60million contract offer.
