Sources: Rangers accelerate goalkeeper signing as loan deal edges closer

Rangers are accelerating their efforts to bring in a goalkeeper ahead of the new season, sources close to the club have told Football Insider.

Russell Martin’s side are interested in signing Brighton’s Carl Rushworth on a loan deal, as they look to address their shot-stopper issues.

Discussions are intensifying behind the scenes as Rangers work on agreeing a deal this week.

Rushworth has been at the south coast side since 2019, completing loan spells at Walsall, Lincoln, Swansea, and Hull.

Rangers have just over a week until their Champions League qualifying campaign gets underway, as they face Panathinaikos on 22 July, and would like to add to their squad before that date.

Rangers want to replace Butland

After Jack Butland’s miserable 2024/25 campaign, any incoming shot-stopper could be given a starting berth.

Butland was dropped by former Rangers manager Barry Ferguson in April, with Liam Kelly preferred for a number of big games.

However, Martin is keen to address the goalkeeper problem within the squad, and Rushworth is desperate to find a move that will ensure him game time.

The 24-year-old has not played a single senior minute for Brighton since his move from Halifax six years ago.

Rangers pushing to sign Crystal Palace talent

Meanwhile, sources have told Football Insider that Martin is the driving force behind Rangers’ efforts to sign Crystal Palace star Jesurun Rak-Sakyi in the summer transfer window.

While there have been suggestions of a permanent move for the winger, a loan deal is considered more likely at this stage, given the finances involved in the deal.

This comes after former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 8 July that Rangers are considering signing Rak-Sakyi on loan.

However, the Ibrox club are not the only ones interested in the Palace academy product this summer, with a number of clubs keeping a close eye on his situation.
