Sources: Tottenham agree to sign Emerson two years after Nuno snub
Tottenham have agreed to sign Emerson Royal two years after Nuno Espirito Santo knocked back the chance to take him to Wolves, Football Insider understands.
The right-back, 22, has undergone a medical in Spain today as he puts the finishing touches to a £25.7m move from Barcelona.
A Spurs source has told Football Insider that Emerson was offered to Nuno two years ago at Wolves when they were in the market for a right-back and then again last year.
But the Portuguese knocked back the defender and instead chose to sign Nelson Semedo in the summer of 2020.
Semedo’s Wolves career has never kicked into life as he suffered a fairly underwhelming first season in England.
The defender started 34 of Wanderers’ Premier League games last season, scoring one goal and chipping in with one assist.
Wolves suffered through the second half of the campaign after star man Raul Jimenez suffered a season-ending injury.
Meanwhile, Emerson was heavily involved in Real Betis’ successful 2020-21 La Liga campaign while on loan at the club,
The defender has featured in all three of Ronald Koeman’s side’s league games this season and started the 2-1 win over Getafe on Sunday.
Nuno has now changed his mind with Emerson set to become Spurs fifth signing of the summer.
This follows moves for following deals for Bryan Gil, Cristian Romero, Pape Sarr and Pierluigi Gollini.
Serge Aurier and Matt Doherty’s struggles at Spurs have led Fabio Paratici to enter the transfer market for a new right-back.
Nuno is unconvinced by the pair and has played the younger Japhet Tanganga ahead of them this season.
