Southampton ‘could sack Russell Martin tomorrow night’
Southampton could sack Russell Martin this weekend as the club and give the new manager the chance to oversee the crucial showdown against Everton on 2 November.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson claimed that the newly promoted team could axe Martin after a disastrous start to the campaign.
The Saints remain winless in the Premier League after the opening eight games, having only scored six times while conceding 18.
Pressure has been mounting on the 38-year-old manager throughout the season, and that was intensified after they threw away a two-goal lead against Leicester City last weekend to lose 3-2.
Southampton could make a major decision on Russell Martin’s future this week
“I watched them last week against Leicester, and we all know that they lost the goal in the last minute, I thought they were a lot better in the first half,” Robinson told Football Insider.
“In the first half last week against Leicester, I saw a little bit of a change; they were a little bit more pragmatic.
“They weren’t afraid to go a little bit more direct, I saw a little bit more old-school defending from them.
“That’s a team that could stay in the Premier League playing like that and giving it a go in the way that they did.
“But they’re a team that are lacking confidence, they’re lacking form, and obviously when they went back to two all, you could almost see it.
“The writing was on the wall.
“This weekend against Manchester City was never going to be a season-defining game, but we’ll see where the Southampton board are after this weekend.
“It will blow everyone’s coupons apart if Southampton have got anything at Manchester City this weekend.

“They’re going to give the new manager the Everton game.
“If he doesn’t get sacked after this weekend, straight after the City match tomorrow, you know the Everton game is going to be pivotal for him.”
