Stefan Borson drops verdict on Kevin De Bruyne agreeing new Man City deal

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne’s injury record could present a potential issue as he prepares to open talks over a new contract with the club.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Premier League champions will have to decide what they are prepared to pay the Belgium international as he heads into the latter part of his career.

De Bruyne’s contract is set to expire in June 2025 after he’s spent the past nine years at the Etihad.

Football Insider revealed on 3 October Man City will do “everything they can” to tie the 33-year-old down to a new deal.

Talks are now planned with De Bruyne over extending his stay in Manchester, with more clarity on the situation expected to be provided before the end of 2024.

The attacking midfielder was heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia throughout the summer window and could agree a deal with any interested parties from January onwards.

Kevin De Bruyne injuries could present Man City contract issue

Borson believes De Bruyne’s future could come down to his injury record and whether he wants to move to Saudi.

He told Football Insider: “I think City have shown if you look at the Gundogan situation a couple of years ago, where he ended up going to Barcelona on a free, they don’t like giving long contracts to players of a certain age with a potential injury profile.

“I think that will be the biggest issue with De Bruyne.

“He’s obviously had a lot of issues with injuries in the last couple of years.

“I think for De Bruyne, the balancing will be whether he wants to go to Saudi Arabia and, ultimately, what’s his injury record like and what are City prepared to pay.

“That will be the equation that will have to be dealt with by him over the next few months.
