Stefan Borson drops verdict on Man City signing Antoine Semenyo in January

Manchester City are one of several clubs considering making a move to sign Antoine Semenyo ahead of the January transfer window.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (5 December) Liverpool are the front-runners to sign Semenyo despite the interest from Pep Guardiola’s side.

Semenyo agreed a new contract with Bournemouth in the summer, extending his stay at the Vitality Stadium until 2030.

However, Semenyo’s new deal included a £65million release clause that can be activated in January, while the price will drop further next summer.

Man City could accelerate Antoine Semenyo plans

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Guardiola’s side could take the opportunity to activate the Ghana international’s release clause in January.

Tottenham have also been heavily linked with Semenyo, with Manchester UnitedNewcastle United and Arsenal understood to be monitoring his situation.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the release clause being activated in January, Borson said: “It wouldn’t surprise me particularly. I would think a few clubs will be interested at the £65m price this time of year, just to bolster their squads.

“Whether it’s City, I don’t know. I think Semenyo, they may say, ‘Well, there’s an opportunity to bring a signing forward from the summer. The release clause is manageable.

“I mean, certainly Bournemouth and I guess himself seem to have gone a little bit off the boil since all of the press was out there.”

Semenyo had a strong start to the season, but he has failed to register a goal or an assist in any of his past six Premier League appearances.

Tottenham could blow Man City away in Semenyo race

Borson revealed Tottenham could also push to sign Semenyo in January alongside Man City.

“It wouldn’t surprise me, but likewise if we found out he’s going to Spurs for example, that would also fit,” said Borson.

“I can’t see really any of the other big players being in for him at £65m. Maybe Newcastle. But I don’t know where squad fit wise that works, although he is a flexible player.

“I think it’s possible, but it’s also possible he doesn’t move in this window. There is a release clause in the summer, which I actually think is less, so there is a chance that it just waits until the summer.”

Semenyo, who turns 26 next month, has registered six goals and three assists in 15 appearances for Bournemouth this season.
