Stefan Borson drops verdict on Russell Martin’s termination fee after Rangers sack

Rangers are on the lookout for a new manager after deciding to part ways with Russell Martin at Ibrox.

Martin was sacked by Rangers on 5 October after just 17 games in charge following a poor start to the season.

Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Falkirk was the final straw for the board, having won just one of their opening seven games in the Scottish Premiership.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider about the financial implications Ibrox chiefs will have been considering when deciding to sack Martin

Rangers likely agreed Russell Martin termination clause

Martin proved hugely unpopular with the Rangers fans during his time in Glasgow, with protests held in recent weeks.

Rangers’ board is now under pressure to make the right appointment as they look to salvage their season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Martin’s compensation, Borson said: “I think most of these clubs now have to be pretty stupid not to realise that the life of a manager is very uncertain.

“Unless you’re pulling a manager in from another club where that manager is not going to agree some flimsy termination clause, if somebody’s leaving another job where they’ve built up a lot of security and you’re asking them to leave, then clearly the termination clause that you’re going to do there is going to be more expensive than one where a Russell Martin is seeing this as an amazing opportunity for himself.

“He’s going to be reasonable on the termination clause in the event that it doesn’t work. Now, it is possible that it’s scaled up from a higher amount in the first month, but it would not surprise me if it’s a fixed amount of let’s say six months’ notice, nine months’ notice, 12 months’ notice, and they’ve terminated it on that basis they’ll pay him out and that’ll be that.”

Martin joined Rangers in June after previously spending time with Southampton, Swansea City and MK Dons.

Stefan Borson reveals why Rangers sacked Russell Martin

Borson insisted Rangers won’t have been considering Martin’s compensation before deciding to sack him.

“It’s one of these where there’s no choice, and it’s tail wagging the dog if you start making these decisions based purely on what it’s going to cost to sack the manager,” said Borson.

“You need to make the decision based on the bigger picture and take the penalty of removing the manager where it’s clearly not working because the consequences of a failing manager are very significant and far beyond the compensation levels that might be payable to Russell Martin.”

Steven Gerrard has pulled out of the running to be the next Rangers manager after he was expected to return to Ibrox.

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl is the current favourite to land the job, but club chiefs are still considering their decision.
