Steven Gerrard wants staff ‘fined’ amid Liverpool player message

Steven Gerrard has criticised the FA and England staff on social media for delaying Curtis Jones’ senior debut.

Jones, 23, capped his impressive England debut with a cheeky backheel past Odisseas Vlachodimos in the Greece goal to secure a 3-0 win and avenge their shock 2-1 defeat in the previous fixture.

The Liverpool midfielder was one of five players drafted in to replace a whopping nine to withdraw from Lee Carsley’s last squad as interim England manager.

Incoming manager Thomas Tuchel will have some serious decisions to make once he takes over, with Jones inserting himself as a potential starter in this highly competitive England squad.

Steven Gerrard backs Curtis Jones after England debut

Gerrard, 44, knows a thing or two about playing for England, playing 114 games and scoring 21 goals in arguably the most talented generation of players the country has ever seen.

His managerial career hasn’t quite gone to plan, however, with his Al-Ettifaq side currently 12th in the 18-team Saudi Pro League, with five losses in their ten league games this season, including four in their last five outings.

Impressed from afar, Gerrard took to Instagram to send the cheeky message, with current Liverpool star Jones receiving the seal of approval from a club legend.

There is still work to be done for Jones and England as they prepare to take on the Republic of Ireland in their final UEFA Nations League game of the group stages on Sunday (November 17).

Carsley has England well placed at the top of their group, giving Tuchel the perfect opportunity to secure the nation’s first piece of silverware since 1966.
