Steven Gerrard will be fuming after ‘dramatic’ Aston Villa development – pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Steven Gerrard will be “sat at home scratching his head” after watching Aston Villa beat Brentford 4-0 on Sunday (23 October).
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the performance was a “real turnaround” for a side who had failed to win any of their last five games.
Aston Villa stormed to a 4-0 home win over 10th-place Brentford at Villa Park and were 3-0 up inside 14 minutes of action.
It was a dramatic contrast to the performance which saw the Midlands side fall to a 3-0 defeat away at Fulham last Thursday (20 October).
That game proved to be Gerrard’s last at the helm of Villa, with his 11-month tenure cut short immediately after the loss.
Whelan insisted the Brentford victory will have been a real “kick in the teeth” for the former Villa Park boss.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “It’s a real turnaround for a team who were really struggling for form, confidence, and goals.
“You get rid of a manager and then all of a sudden you go and put in a performance like that against a good Brentford side.
“Steven Gerrard will be sat at home scratching his head.
“It’s a bit of a kick in the teeth for him to sit at home and see that dramatic change, 3-0 up in 14 minutes.

“But we know there can be a resurgence in form when you sack a manager.
“It’s not great to see for Gerrard, but Villa have set a standard now – and they’ve got to maintain that until the World Cup now.”
