Chris Sutton blasts Rangers board after manager decision
Former Celtic striker and BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton has questioned what the Rangers board are playing at after their protracted manager search ended with Graeme Murty being appointed until the end of the season.
Almost two months after sacking Pedro Caixinha, the Gers decided to confirm that Murty would take the reins until the end of the season after stepping in as caretaker following Caixinha’s sacking.
The Gers approached – and were rejected by – Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes to replace the Portuguese in the hotseat but were left with egg on their face after McInnes opted to remain at Pittodrie.
Sutton admitted the Rangers job was a “really attractive” one but can’t get his head around the Rangers board’s lack of activity.
“The Rangers job is a really attractive job,” Sutton said (after 1 minute, 45 seconds) while speaking to BT Sport’s Periscope account on Saturday morning,
“For them to dither and dally and get to this stage, what on earth are the board playing at?”
Murty won six of nine games as interim manager before losing his first game as permanent boss in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat by Kilmarnock.
The 43-year-old joined the Gers in August 2016 as Under-20’s head coach from Norwich City’s Academy.
Murty also stepped in after Mark Warburton’s shock resignation in February before Caixinha was appointed as his long-term successor the following month.
The Gers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership and trail leaders Celtic by 11 points.
