Talks commence: Manchester United hold discussions with 22-year-old speed machine – report
Manchester United have started talks with attacker Anthony Martial about extending his contract at Old Trafford, according to a report.
The Sun claims that the Red Devils are in discussions with the 22-year-old about prolonging his future beyond 2019, but they face a “massive battle” to get him to sign a new deal after struggling for starts this season
It is understood that his future could lie away from them next season, but Man United don’t want to sell to a direct Premier League rival.
Football Insider verdict:
Man United could perform a dramatic U-turn with Martial if he ends up staying next season, with widespread reports in recent weeks suggesting he was destined for the exit doors. There is no doubting that the speed machine can rip defences apart on his day and is part of an exciting set of attacker at Jose Mourinho’s disposal. The left-winger made 45 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring 11 goals and supplying nine assists. However, the competition for places is absolutely fierce in the Man United starting XI and it seems difficult to see an easy path for him to break into the side on a permanent basis. Martial has shown in patches his quality since his big-money move to Old Trafford, but a fresh move now could be the best step for his career. Alexis Sanchez’s January arrival has certainly pushed Martial further down the pecking order and he has paid with it by missing out on France’s World Cup squad this summer.
