‘That was Russell Martin’s problem’ – EFL legend says how Danny Rohl can become Rangers success
The drama of Rangers managerial search appears to finally be coming to an end with the appointment of Danny Rohl.
It was only last week when Rohl pulled out of the race to become Rangers manager as Kevin Muscat appeared to be clear favourite for the job at Ibrox.
But in a dramatic turn of events, Rangers move for Muscat is off as the club had concerns over when the Shanghai Port boss could take the role.
Now, after searching for Russell Martin’s successor, Rangers are on the brink of appointing Rohl as manager and want to get an agreement wrapped up before their Scottish Premiership clash with Kilmarnock on Sunday.

Curtis Davies gives Danny Rohl to Rangers seal of approval
Rohl is widely known for the tremendous job he did at Sheffield Wednesday under difficult circumstances.
The German tactician led the Owls to survival in 2023/24 before guiding them to a 12th place finish a year later.
Former striker Billy Dodds isn’t confident Rohl is right for Rangers, feeling he’s similar to Martin, whereas EFL legend Curtis Davies has already said how he can become a success with the Gers.
The ex-Hull City and Derby County defender has urged the 36-year-old to compromise his style if it means achieving instant results, something Martin never did.
“I think Rangers are getting a top manager” 🔵

“I think they are getting a top manager. I think it’s a really difficult situation at Rangers, because yes, [Danny] Rohl is going there with good pedigree and from doing an excellent job in a struggling Sheffield Wednesday team,” Davies told Sky Sports.
“But he’s going to a Rangers side that has to win, and has to win now. So, as much as he’s done really well and got a great way that he wants to do things, he has to hit the ground running, regardless of what type of football he plays.
“Rangers will demand winning, and that was Russell Martin’s problem, he obviously tried to build the philosophy and couldn’t get the results. So as long as Danny Rohl goes in there with the mindset ‘win by any means’, I think he’ll do really well up there.”

Rohl appointment is a huge risk
Rangers appointing Rohl is a risk and one that will either backfire horribly or turn into a masterstroke, there’s no in between.
Rohl has limited experience managing a club where the pressure is intensified, as expectations were low at Wednesday.
Danny Rohl’s record at Sheffield Wednesday |
89 games |
34 wins |
19 draws |
36 losses |
However, he has to hit the ground running in Scotland, otherwise, the scrutiny will be ramped up and fans will quickly get on his back.
Admittedly, finding someone who wants to work on Kevin Thelwell and Michael Stewart has been extremely hard, with Steven Gerrard rejecting Rangers for that exact reason.
That being said, the Rangers squad is still easily talented enough to challenge at the top of the division, and all the pressure will be on Rohl to spearhead their charge up the table.
