This is what Rangers players need – Hugh Burns gives verdict on what Gerrard must do at Gers

Rangers legend Hugh Burns believes Steven Gerrard will need to provide “stability” if he is to be a success as manager at Ibrox.

The Liverpool legend takes the reins at Ibrox next week – and Burns insists Gerrard already has players at his disposal who are good enough to catch bitter rivals Celtic.

Burns also thinks Gerrard’s contacts in the game should help him bring players to Ibrox and help the Light Blues compete next season.

“Steven Gerrard too will inherit a lot of really good players, and the difference is, he might just get more out of them,” Burns said, as quoted by the Gers’ official website.

“If you are at Rangers you can play, there is no doubt about it. Players need a bit of stability, and he has a number of good boys there he can work with.

“With his contacts and the people he knows down south, if he can add a few more players to the good players we have, it will hopefully mean we can compete.”

Football Insider verdict:

Although Burns thinks the players need stability, the likelihood is there will be few of them at the club who have a long-term future at Ibrox. Stability is always going to be important but with many of the current squad having been at the club for a number of years, many need moving on and better quality added over the summer to replace them. Gerrard’s contacts will definitely help bring players in and even some of the names linked with moves to Ibrox this summer show the sort of impact Gerrard’s arrival will have. All he needs to do is get some of the signings over the line and start preparing for the Gers first competitive game of the season on July 12th when they kick off their Europa League campaign. Gerrard will be desperate to avoid a repeat of last year’s Europa League humiliation when the Light Blues were eliminated in the first round by Progres Niederkorn.
