Liverpool are ready to pay £70m to buy back Jarell Quansah, this is why
Liverpool are reportedly ready to exercise the buy-back clause inserted in Jarell Quansah’s contract when he was sold to Bayer Leverkusen.
The Reds sold the defender to the Bundesliga side for around £35million last summer, and the buy-back clause reportedly stands at around £70m.
Quansah has impressed in Germany, despite the club’s disappointing season. Leverkusen finished second last season, but are trailing down in sixth in this campaign.
They will hope to keep hold of the 23-year-old, although they will have no choice in the matter should Liverpool trigger his buy-back clause.
Liverpool are targeting defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window, with Arne Slot’s options limited this season.

Sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool want a new right-back in the summer amid injury issues and a lack of depth.
Jeremie Frimpong arrived from Leverkusen in the summer, but his opening season has been littered with injuries.
And the same can be said of Conor Bradley, who was ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a significant knee injury against Arsenal in January.
During his time at Liverpool, Quansah regularly played at right-back and provided a strong option there.
The Reds would undoubtedly be bringing him back to play in the centre of defence, however, where an issue is rapidly becoming clear.
Giovanni Leoni has missed almost the entirety of the season after rupturing his ACL, and Ibrahima Konate looks set to leave at the end of his contract this summer.
Virgil van Dijk has continued to look dominant, but at the age of 34, the few weaknesses slipping into his game will only worsen.
Patrick Berger reported on Tuesday that Liverpool are considering the £70m buy-back for Quansah, as they look to cover for an impending cavity.
Quansah’s stats in the Bundesliga
Despite Leverkusen’s disappointing season, Quansah has been a consistent and reliable presence in the back-line.
Incredibly, the defender was the most advanced Leverkusen player when he found the net to rescue a point against Mainz on Saturday.
| Jarell Quansah | Bundesliga 2025-26 |
| Appearances | 19 |
| Goals | 3 |
| Interceptions | 16 |
| Clearances | 68 |
| Duels won | 72 |
| Duel won % | 63.2% |
And that rather sums up the 23-year-old’s brave and progressive style of defending in the Bundesliga. Quansah has completed 12 successful dribbles, created nine chances and holds a 90.2 per cent pass completion rate.
Defensively, the England international has been superb. He has made 68 recoveries, 18 tackles and has been dribbled past just once in 19 appearances.
Should Liverpool bring him back this summer, they will be bringing back a far more complete defender than the one sent to Germany.
