Three Premier League clubs who should sign Arsenal star Lewis-Skelly after shock update
Arsenal left-back Myles Lewis-Skelly is attracting attention ahead of the January transfer window after recent limited game time.
Mikel Arteta has preferred Riccardo Calafiori over Lewis-Skelly at left-back, presumably due to his defensive qualities, offering more height and strength at set-pieces.
But that has restricted the 19-year-old to appearances from the bench in the Premier League, while starting twice in the Champions League and Carabao Cup.
Sadly, a lack of game time has impacted the youngster’s chances of starring for England, with Thomas Tuchel leaving him out of his latest squad announcement.
As a result, multiple Premier League clubs are monitoring Lewis-Skelly’s situation, and Football Insider has analysed who should sign him.
Everton
Everton are looking to strengthen their defence in January, with David Moyes adding a new centre-back to his wish list.
But a new left-back could also be on the agenda, and that is why Everton should consider a loan move for Lewis-Skelly.
Vitaliy Mykolenko and Adam Aznou are the two options currently at Moyes’ disposal in that position, but neither have torn up any trees.
First-choice Mykolenko is yet to score or assist in any of his 10 appearances this term, with Lewis-Skelly offering more energy and dynamism down the left flank.
Newcastle United
Newcastle United are arguably the Premier League team who need a left-back the most, and that explains why they should enter the race for Lewis-Skelly.
Eddie Howe has often used Dan Burn as a left-back, and that backfired on him over the weekend after Burn was sent off against Brentford.
Lewis Hall, who has suffered his fair share of injury problems, started on the bench in that fixture and could do with someone to challenge him.
A loan for Lewis-Skelly is therefore perfect for both individuals. The Arsenal starlet gets to play regular football and in the Champions League, while Hall gets to rival his England compatriot.
Sunderland
Sunderland have emerged as the Premier League’s surprise package, sitting in fourth position after securing a 2-2 draw against Arsenal.
The Black Cats could spend even more in January in an attempt to qualify for Europe, and one area they need to bolster with depth is at left-back.
Although they currently have many options in that role, including Reinildo Mandava, Arthur Masuaku, Dennis Cirkin and Nordi Mukiele, Lewis-Skelly would offer them incredible attacking potential.
Reinildo, for instance, is more known for his defensive exploits, while the rest haven’t been good enough to play regularly enough, or in the case of Mukiele, isn’t a natural left-back.
Therefore, capturing Lewis-Skelly on loan could take their attacking prowess to the next level.
