25-year-old should be sold: Three things we learned about Leeds in defeat against Sutton
COMMENT By Harvey Byrne
Football Insider analyses three talking points from Leeds’ 1-0 defeat against Sutton in the FA Cup on Sunday.
Antonsson should be sold
Marcus Antonsson was brought to the club in the summer from Swedish top flight side Kalmar. The 25-year-old came with a lot of promise after scoring a very impressive 13 goals from 18 fixtures last season. However, he hasn’t brought the same form to Yorkshire. The striker has just three goals from 20 appearances in all competitions at Leeds. Additionally, his performance against non-league Sutton on Sunday was nothing short of woeful. He should be axed from the 18-man match day squad for all future matches and sold as soon as possible.
First team players won’t be worried about their positions
Garry Monk made 10 changes to his Leeds side with a number of youngsters and fringe men handed an opportunity to play against a non-league side. However, none of them grasped the opportunity. The Yorkshire giants are doing fantastically well in the league as they sit in fourth place. Stars such as Chris Wood, Pontus Jansson and Kyle Bartley have allowed them to do so and they certainly won’t be worried about their places in the team after the performances of the fringe players on Sunday afternoon.
Defeat will work out for Leeds in the long-run
Many Leeds fans will be horrified by the defeat to non-league Sutton. However, given the position of the club in the Championship it may work out as the best in the long-run. The Championship is an extremely demanding league with 46 fixtures and it seems like Leeds may have to play three more fixtures if they are to win promotion with a play-off place looking the most likely. The Yorkshire giants could benefit hugely from only having to focus on the league as the season enters its final stages and fans should not be too caught up in the defeat against Sutton.
