Three things learned about Newcastle v Manchester City: This man the Magpies’ dark horse
COMMENT
Newcastle United slipped to a narrow 1-0 defeat in their clash with Manchester City at St James’ Park on Wednesday.
Raheem Sterling opened the scoring for the visitors just after the half hour mark, poking home from a Kevin De Bruyne pass in a first half which City dominated.
Newcastle’s one chance in the opening 45 minutes came courtesy of Rolando Aarons, his chip over goalkeeper Ederson cleared off the line by Nicolas Otamendi as it floated goalwards.
The Magpies fought for an equaliser with a spirited performance throughout the second half, with City finding their chances limited, but Sterling’s first half strike was enough to secure the three points.
Newcastle came into the clash off the back of a 3-2 win away at West Ham, a result which put an end to the Magpies’ nine game winless streak, which had seen them pick up just one point from a possible 27.
City meanwhile had gone the season unbeaten, notching up 17 straight victories which included a 4-0 thrashing of Bournemouth in their last outing, and they managed to extend that to 18 on Tyneside.
So what can fans take away from the clash at the St James’ Park?
Here, Football Insider analyses three things learned in Wednesday’s match against the table toppers, including one man who promises to be the club’s dark horse in the new year.
