Many fans would have been lying if they claimed they had not been expecting this to be a mauling, but Rafa Benitez’s men put in a performance they can be proud of.
Despite being against the wall for much of the clash, they stood resolute and even managed to create a chance or two of their own.
There have been, and will continue to be, better teams than Newcastle who are torn apart by Pep Guardiola and his men this season, and if the Magpies can deliver displays like this against all opposition then they will no doubt pick up enough points to survive this season.
