His usual energy, enthusiasm and confidence was replaced by uncertainty, as little mistakes began to creep into his game.
Spurs needed him to be at his best behind Harry Kane but he lacked any influence and was as much a passenger as anything else.
The lowlight of his performance came on the hour mark, finding himself dispossessed by Mesut Ozil, who is not known for his defensive contribution.
The likes of Heung-min Son would have no doubt offered more energy and intensity, and there should be a case for Alli to be axed against Dortmund in midweek.
