23-year-old debutant not good enough: Three things we learned from Leeds win v Port Vale

2. Wood is going to have to shoulder the load

Caleb Ekuban looked a handful in the opposition box and has got the presence a modern-day striker needs. Unfortunately, on today’s evidence he’s not the finished article yet. And at 23 he really should be. Ekuban had a number of half-chances but poor control or a weak finish meant he nearly ended up without a goal – and didn’t really look like getting one until the 82nd minute. It’s harsh to judge a striker on one game, but this was a great chance to show what he could do, against the sort of defence you won’t find in the Championship. And at times it was really painful to watch. On this evidence, if Chris Wood is injured or suspended, then Leeds will have a problem. And that leaves them vulnerable and praying that nothing happens to their goal-scoring talisman. Good strikers don’t come cheap but it might be worth Thomas Christiansen seeing if he can pick anyone up on loan before the summer transfer window shuts. To be fair he picked up towards the end and got his goal, so he deserves at least one more chance to prove himself.
