It seems strange to add the final game of Newcastle’s doomed 2015/16 campaign on a list of highlights, but this was a day in which the Toon Army knew they truly needed Benitez to stay – and they made their feelings very clear.
Already relegated from the top flight, the Spanish boss sent his side out to play with freedom and to express themselves – and that they certainly did, dismantling a Tottenham side which had been chasing the Premier League title.
While several members of the squad left Tyneside for pastures new, unwilling to ply their trade in the Championship for a season, this was a fantastic way to see ‘see you soon’ to the Premier League, and it all came from Benitez’s management.
The 90 minutes of pleading with the manager seemed to do the trick, as he put pen to paper on a three year deal not long after.
