Already promoted back to the top flight, the Magpies had managed to chase Brighton down to ensure the title chase went to the final day of the season – although it was primarily due to the Seagulls’ own inability to clinch first position in the last few weeks.
Knowing results would have to go their way even if they did win, Newcastle had another excellent end of season performance, walking all over Barnsley on the way to a 3-0 victory.
However, a late Jack Grealish goal gave Aston Villa a draw against Brighton, meaning it was Newcastle who were champions – a deserved reward for their difficult season down in the second tier.
