Tottenham considering 25-year-old mainstay from PL rivals – report
By Derek Smithson
Tottenham are eyeing a potential move for Southampton defender Cedric Shares, according to a report.
The Mirror claim that Spurs are interested in the 25-year-old that has become a mainstay in the Saints starting line-up.
It is understood that Mauricio Pochettino is considering the right-back as Manchester City continue their pursuit of Kyle Walker.
The report details that Juventus are eyeing a move for Cedric, while Barcelona are also considering him as a back-up option if they miss out on Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin.
Southampton could now move to hand the full-back a new deal, despite him only signing a new contract last August.
Cedric has become an important player for the Saints and made 34 appearances last season across all competitions.
The Portugal international, who won the European Championships in 2016, is an athletic option up and down the right flank.
He chipped in with three assists last season to show his offensive qualities and is also a major part of a solid defensive set-up.
Football Insider verdict:
Spurs already have Kieran Trippier as a suitable replacement for Walker’s expected departure and could consider bringing through emerging youngster Kyle Walker-Peters from their academy. However, they will need a new senior option at right-back if they are to compete for silverware. Southampton ace Cedric would be a superb addition for the north London club and compete alongside Trippier for a starting spot. The 25-year-old already has Premier League experience under his belt and would be able to make a seamless transition. He is one of the most underrated defenders in the top flight and would be a real clever signing by Mauricio Pocehttino.
In other Tottenham transfer news, they have submitted a five-year contract for an attacker.
