Tottenham could now keep Kane after £64m reported update – pundit
Noel Whelan has claimed Man City may end their pursuit of Tottenham striker Harry Kane after reported news on Erling Haaland’s release clause.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds and Middlesbrough forward suggested Haaland could scupper Kane’s hopes of a move to the Etihad if his release clause becomes active in January.
According to Marca, via the Daily Mail (August 21st), the goal machine could leave Borussia Dortmund as soon as January, with his release clause potentially being brought forward.
The £64million clause in the striker’s contract was expected to become active next summer.
A number of European giants are interested in signing Haaland after a season he scored 41 goals in 41 appearances last season.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs if Kane’s potential move to City could be effected by the reported news, Whelan said:
“I think that could have an impact on how far City are willing to go for Kane, especially when you consider the difference between Haaland and Harry Kane’s age.
“This is going to be Harry Kane’s last move where Haaland could be sold later on if need be, even though Man City don’t need to sell anyone.
“I know the fee is £64million but it sounds like the agent is putting people off with his demands. It’s a stumbling block for a lot of clubs and we don’t know where City stand on that.

“But Haaland ticks a lot of boxes so maybe it would be worth holding out for him.
“In Harry Kane, City could sign a ready-made Premier League striker who would score a hatful of goals for Man City.”
