Tottenham expert fumes at Clement Lenglet ‘issue’ after transfer update

Tottenham should have included a purchase option in Clement Lenglet’s loan deal.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

On 3 August, The Athletic revealed Spurs are paying 50% of Lenglet’s wages while he is on loan at the club from Barcelona for the 2022-23 season.

The defender made his Spurs debut from the bench in Saturday’s (6 August) win over Southampton.

Wenham is frustrated that Barcelona will be able to dictate terms if Spurs want to make Lenglet’s deal permanent next summer.

“The wages, that’s fine,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I will always have an issue with this deal in that we don’t have an option to buy or anything like that.

“However well he does, they can just up the price. By all accounts, he has settled in very well already.

“Obviously he came on against Southampton. I would probably stick with the same back three for the game against Chelsea.

“So we will have to wait a little bit longer for his full debut. That’s only because the other three players are Premier League proven and have that experience of going to Stamford Bridge.

“I’m pleased with Lenglet. Paying half his wages is fine and I hope they are desperate to sell him next summer.”

Lenglet made 27 appearances for Barca during the 2021-22 season.

He has made 160 total appearances for the club.
