Tottenham expert identifies ‘main target’ amid source’s £20m reveal – ‘there are rumours circulating’

Alan Hutton has claimed the “main target” for Tottenham must be to tie Antonio Conte down for the long term.

The former Spurs and Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested a new deal would help banish “rumours” of the 53-year-old returning to former side Juventus.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (8 October) that Tottenham are offering Conte a new deal worth more than £20million-a-year.

Spurs want something formalised before the start of the winter transfer window on 1 January with the former Chelsea boss out of contract at the end of the season.

The Italian has won 28 of his 48 matches in charge of the club since taking over from Nuno Espirito Santo last year.

Conte has been linked with a return to Juventus with current boss Max Allegri in danger of losing his job.

Hutton insisted transforming Tottenham into contenders isn’t an “easy fix” but a new contract would “move the club forward”.

He told Football Insider: “This is the main target for Tottenham moving forward.

“I’ve always said he’s an elite manager. It’s a long-term process, it’s not an easy fix.

“Things aren’t going to change overnight, so to tie him down to a long-term deal means he can solely focus on Tottenham.

“He’s done a great job so far. There were rumours circulating about Juventus, and what was happening there.

“It would squash all of that and let him concentrate on the job at Spurs.

“That’ll be the main thing for Daniel Levy and allowing the club to move forward.”
