Tottenham expert issues ‘killer’ Clement Lenglet transfer verdict after what he’s seen

The failure to include a buy option in Clement Lenglet’s Tottenham loan deal could prove “killer” to any hopes of signing him permanently.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Lenglet, 27, joined Tottenham on a season-long loan from Barcelona on 8 July.

The deal does not include the option to buy the defender at the end of the season, something Wenham is frustrated by after some impressive pre-season performances.

“Clenglet featured against Roma and looked very, very good,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He created some good forwards passing and there was some good positional play that allowed others to push on.

“He has certainly put his name in the ring [to start v Southampton]. Lenglet had that attacking nous before he went to Barcelona and for whatever reason couldn’t get into the team.

“There is a player in there and if there is any manager in world football who can get to that player, especially if he is a defender, it’s Antonio Conte.

“I would make me beyond happy if we didn’t need Bastoni or Gvardiol all along and actually Lenglet is the man who is going to deliver for us.

“He has been written off and that is where that lack of a buy option will become a killer. If he settles in and does a job then we would be more than happy to buy him, I’m sure.”

Lenglet made 27 appearances for Barca during the 2021-22 season.

He has made 160 total appearances for the club.
