Tottenham expert slams Giovani Lo Celso after source’s £20m update – ‘utter disaster’

Giovani Lo Celso’s Tottenham exit “pays for itself” with his January departure key to the club qualifying for the Champions League.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

A recruitment source told Football Insider (31 May) that Villarreal are in advanced talks to sign Lo Celso permanently following a successful loan spell with the La Liga side.

The Londoners were initially holding out for £30m earlier this year for the 26-year-old but will now accept closer to £20m.

When asked if he would be happy to see Lo Celso leave at a reduced price, Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, “Yeah, he has been an utter disaster in Premier League football.

“When people were quoting bigger figures based on what he did in Spain, that’s not really relevant.

“Yes, Villarreal have money because they got into the Champions League but I think Tottenham just want rid of him.

“This is a new era at Tottenham and we showed last summer that we are prepared to take lower fees to get people out the door.

“Look at Alderweireld, he went for £3million. People were screaming and shouting about that. We let Alli go for free in January.

“We got rid of those players in January, improved the squad harmony and got top four which gives us £60million.

“It pays for itself. Sometimes you have to take a loss. I would just get Lo Celso out the door.”

Lo Celso made 22 appearances for Villarreal after joining the club in January.

He thrived during his side’s run to the 2021-22 Champions League semi-finals and won the man of the match away during Villarreal’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich on 4 April.
