‘Needed to get out’ – Tottenham flop makes honest revelation about transfer
By Russell Edge
Former Tottenham goalkeeper Pau Lopez has revealed he was happy with his experience during his season long loan at the club.
Lopez arrived as a 21-year-old on a one year temporary deal from La Liga side Espanyol, set to compete with Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm for a place between the sticks at North London.
However he may be considered a flop after he struggled to establish himself as anywhere near the quality required for the first team, making just a handful of appearances on the substitutes bench.
Instead he managed to make just seven appearances for the reserve side, before returning to Espanyol over the summer, with Spurs choosing not to make the deal permanent.
He has opened up about his time at Tottenham and has admitted that despite his lack of game time he does not regret making the move.
He told Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo: “I knew I would not have many minutes if I stayed (at Espanyol) and it was a good experience.
“I needed to get out, it was a difficult year and I had the opportunity to go to England.
“I have to thank the technical staff of Mauricio Pochettino for the experience of working in the Premier League.
“When it comes to making decisions, you think about what will be best for me and my family. I do not regret it and I’m happy.”
Lopez has found himself firmly among the first team set up following his return to Spain, and is keeping fellow shot stopper Diego Lopez, who was the club’s first choice last season.
So far the 22-year-old has started all seven of the club’s league matches this season, conceding 11 goals as they sit in 14th place in La Liga.
