Tottenham idol fumes as ‘ridiculous’ Davinson Sanchez controversy analysed

Paul Robinson has claimed the handball is “ridiculous” after Burnley forward Ashley Barnes was penalised at Tottenham on Sunday.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-White Hart Lane number one suggested referee Kevin Friend had no choice but to point to the spot.

As pictured by BT Sport (15 May), Spurs were awarded a spot-kick when Davinson Sanchez struck the ball onto Ashley Barnes’ arm.

Referee Kevin Friend did not intially point to the spot but reversed his decision after consulting the pitch-side monitor on the advice of VAR official Stuart Attwell.

Robinson claimed the penalty would not have been given when he was playing as it was “ball to hand.”

“The handball has been changed so many time it is ridiculous,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“If that gets given against you you’d feel very aggrieved.

“When I was playing there was no way it would be given as a penalty. That was ball to hand. Barnes was in a position that could be argued as natural.

“Unfortunately, by the letter of the law now it is a penalty. Whether you like it or not it is a penalty.

“I don’t like it. In fact I strongly dislike it. But the referee is in a position where he has to give it. By the letter of the law his arm is outstretched and it has hit his hand. It has been rightly given as a penalty.

“I don’t think even the referee would like that to be a handball if you asked him away from the cameras.

“It is unfortunate that a decision like that can decide a game.

“I don’t want it in the game. It used to be ball to hand. There was no intention from Barnes.”
