Tottenham insider fumes at ‘damaging’ Gollini decision

It was “unnecessary” for Pierluigi Gollini to start as Tottenham lost 1-0 to Chelsea last week.

That is according to Spurs insider John Wenham, who regularly breaks news about the club on his Lilywhite Rose social media channels.

Gollini, 26, started as Tottenham lost 1-0 to Chelsea in the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday (12 January).

He was at fault for the Blues’ goal as he failed to collect a corner that Antonio Rudiger bundled over the line.

This came after he was handed another rare start as Tottenham narrowly avoided an embarrassing defeat to Morecambe in the FA Cup on Sunday (9 January).

“The issues were with the goalkeeper,” Wenham told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I am sick of this whole thing of managers risking our progress in cup competitions by selecting poor goalkeepers.

“Pochettino did it with Vorm. He selected him for a semi-final against Chelsea at Wembley and he cost us a goal.

“We are damaging ourselves by repeatedly doing this. Gollini played against Morecambe a few days before Chelsea as well.

“It was so unnecessary for him to play that game. I get Conte has to rotate but there was no need for Gollini to start.

“He came out, missed the ball and cost us a goal. We were never going to go through but it would have been nice to keep Conte’s unbeaten home record intact.

“That early goal set us on the wrong track. It is so frustrating.”

Tottenham

On 20 October, Wenham told this site the stopper’s move will become permanent if he makes 20 appearances but updated on 7 January to say that he doesn’t think this will happen.

Gollini has now made 10 appearances for Spurs since joining on loan from Atalanta in the summer.

In other news, a pundit has claimed Tottenham could seal ‘signing of the summer’ after Sky transfer update.
