Tottenham midfielder expected to exit after Yves Bissouma arrival – pundit

Harry Winks could leave Tottenham after the club announced the signing of Yves Bissouma from Brighton.

That’s according to former Premier League striker Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Winks, 26, and his future in north London.

Tottenham announced the signing of Bissouma from Brighton on Friday (17 June).

Antonio Conte currently has Bissouma, Winks, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp as central midfield options.

An Everton source told Football Insider (19 June) that the club hope to lure Winks away from Spurs and have made contact over a potential summer deal.

When asked if one of the defensive midfielders currently at Spurs could be heading out the door, Whelan told Football Insider: “I think you’re looking at your Harry Winks.

“It’s been spoken about for quite a number of years now that he could be on the move.

“I think personally that managers before Conte, and I’m talking about Jose Mourinho, preferred Skipp to Winks, and I think we saw that with substitutions, with game time, that Oliver Skipp was probably more preferred in that role.

“I do believe that you can’t separate a midfield with certain star players that are all the same, something’s got to give whether that be one or two.

“You’ve got some very experienced midfield players in Bentancur and Hojbjerg who are a fantastic partnership.

“There’s nothing to say that they can’t get forward and I think it’ll give them a kind of peace of mind knowing that Bissouma is there, that one of you is allowed to go forward and into that three quarter zone and try and get on the end of crosses when you’ve got that security behind you.

“I don’t think that’s a bad system to play and it’s worked so far for Tottenham.”
