Tottenham ‘phenomenon’ Romero may be out for ‘months’ in ‘massive blow’ – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Tottenham could be without Cristian Romero for “months” after an injury update from Antonio Conte.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker admitted the 23-year-old’s absence would be a “massive blow” for the Lilywhites.

Speaking at Friday’s press conference (19th November), Conte confirmed Romero would miss Sunday’s game against Leeds after “bad news” on his injury blow.

The Italian boss revealed the Lilywhites need to wait at least a week before getting the defender in for a scan to assess the extent of the damage.

Romero appeared to pick up a muscular injury in Argentina’s clash with Brazil during the international break.

Whelan admitted he fears the worse for the centre-back after Conte’s latest update.

“I think for a manager that’s new to a club, you want to be able to choose and select your best players,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“Obviously going away with Argentina, he’s got this injury. It’s a massive blow because he’s the new face there. He was the one that was going to be bolstering the back.

“Now, again, they’re struggling to find that partnership that you want to grow and progress through the Premier League games.

“Now it looks like he’s going to be out for a number of months. That is a bad blow for Conte, he’s going to have to go back to his squad now.

“They’ve got big enough strength in depth when it comes to Tottenham and plays to choose from.

“But it doesn’t give you that continuity that you’re looking to find with a partnership in the back line.”

Romero, hailed as a “phenomenal passer” by Football Insider pundit Paul Robinson, has played 13 times for Spurs since joining on an initial loan from Atalanta.
