Tottenham pundit makes bold Sanchez claim after latest on shattering Romero injury

Davinson Sanchez will replace the injured Cristian Romero in the Tottenham starting XI today.

That is the view of former Sunderland and England striker Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the selection dilemma facing Antonio Conte.

Conte confirmed on Friday that Romero is unavailable for the visit of Leeds after suffering a hamstring injury in Argentina’s World Cup qualifier against Brazil.

The Argentine centre-back has started both of Conte’s first two games in charge of the Lilywhites.

Japhet Tanganga, Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez, 25, will all he hoping to get the nod in Romero’s absence.

When asked by Football Insider who is likeliest to start against Leeds, Phillips said:“It’s a difficult one because Conte likes to play with a back three.

“It will be a big blow for him, losing his best centre-half [Romero].

“Who comes in? You can take your pick really. Davinson Sanchez is the most experienced when it comes to the Premier League. He would be the obvious choice in my eyes, it’s a big decision. I think he will start against Leeds because of his experience.

“Conte will be looking to get through until January and then look to strengthen in that area. He will have targets he will be trying to bring in. He will want to make a statement.

“The defence will be an area he is looking at. That back line needs to be tightened up. Losing Romero is a blow.”

Sanchez has made nine appearances across all competitions this season.

However, he has not started a Premier League game since September 26th.
