Tottenham have talked about signing 34-year-old PL veteran this summer – report
By Harvey Byrne
Tottenham have talked about bringing in Everton centre-back Phil Jagielka this summer, according to a report.
The Daily Mail have claimed in an article on their website that the 34-year-old’s name has been a discussion point for the north London club as they seek defensive cover.
It is said that wages have deterred Mauricio Pochettino’s from a number of targets this summer, including Everton’s Ross Barkley and Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.
This has seen them expand their list of potential new recruits and it is reported that Jagielka’s name has surprisingly cropped up.
The Manchester-born defender has been a part of the Everton team since 2007 after completing a move from Sheffield United for just £4million.
He has now remained at the Toffees for 10 years, playing 349 appearances in total for the Blues, which includes 328 encounters in the Premier League.
The 40-time capped England international is now into his final year of his contract at Goodison Park and he could be a realistic option after Everton splashed out on Michael Keane this summer.
Football Insider verdict:
If Jagielka was to leave Everton in search of more first team football then he quite simply would not get that at Tottenham. The centre-back positions are arguably Spurs’ most strongest in their starting line-up with both Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld, who have helped the north London club boast the best defensive record in the Premier League for the last couple of years. Now, Jagielka was not as good as the Belgian duo during his peak and he certainly isn’t at this stage of his career. However, Pochettino may be keen to add known quality to the depth of his squad and after the struggles of Kevin Wimmer he may be looking to replace him with a veteran of the Premier League.
