First team star must be axed: Three things we learned in Tottenham win v Apoel
Sanchez deserves the axe
Despite the convincing scoreline, it was not a convincing performance from Spurs, as they allowed Apoel to test Hugo Lloris on several occasions.
One man guilty of not performing at the standards expected was Davinson Sanchez, who looked unconvincing in Pochettino’s three man defence.
Lining up alongside Ben Davies and Toby Alderweireld, the summer signing was a weak link with a series of errors.
He was caught on the ball, beaten by pace and demonstrated a lack of positional awareness as Apoel were able to break through the defence several times.
Pochettino should be considering dropping the axe on Sanchez, with Jan Vertonghen available after missing out through suspension, although the manager’s tactical decisions could force his hand.
In other Newcastle United news, Benitez’s priority in the winter transfer window has been revealed.
