Robinson swipes at new Tottenham frontrunner and tells Levy to lure Gerrard from Rangers

Paul Robinson fears Tottenham are “five years away from winning a trophy again” as they close in on appointing a new manager.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former White Hart Lane number one claimed “a huge rebuild is needed” at Spurs with doubts over the future of Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Harry Winks and Gareth Bale.

Football Insider understands the London club have held three rounds of talks with Belgium boss Roberto Martinez as they close in on appointing a new manager.

Martinez is the new favourite on the three-man shortlist to succeed Jose Mourinho and the club are confident of appointing their new manager this week.

Robinson would rather the board appoint Steven Gerrard or Scott Parker with an experienced director of football.

“I look at the list now and there is very little on there, Martinez, Potter, Ten Hag that excites me,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs.

“Brendan Rodgers was the one for me but he has ruled himself out. I think he is someone who could have really taken the club forward. He would have had a similar impact to Mauricio Pochettino.

“There needs to be wholesale change. Nobody can run with what Jose has left.

“Harry Kane looks like he is going to leave, Dele Alli and Harry Winks could do the same and Bale might not come back. They also need two new centre-halves. The next manager is going to have a big job on his hands.

“Tottenham are five years away from winning a trophy again. This is not an overnight fix, especially when you look at the list of managers.

“It going to be a long-term project and that is why I would’ve given the job to Steven Gerrard or Scott Parker with an experienced director of football. A huge rebuild is needed and the next appointment is critical.”
