Tottenham told to U-turn on defender deal after what expert has seen from Ange Postecoglou

Tottenham should avoid signing Harry Maguire this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former West Ham striker Frank McAvennie has urged Spurs to avoid signing the England defender as he does not suit Ange Postecoglou’s style of play.

Alongside reported interest from the Lilywhites, this site has previously revealed that Aston Villa are monitoring Maguire ahead of the summer transfer window.

Maguire‘s current contract at Old Trafford runs until 2025 and includes the option of a 12-month extension if the club wish to keep him.

But the 30-year-old has fallen down the pecking order since Erik ten Hag’s arrival and played just 16 Premier League games last season and was only in the starting lineup for eight of those appearances.

The Dutch manager has preferred Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez as his main centre-back options, despite Maguire being the club captain.

With a move likely to be on the cards, McAvennie has urged to Tottenham to avoid a deal for the England international.

He doesn’t suit Postecoglou’s style of play,” he told Football Insider.

“He’s not the quickest of players, and Postecoglou likes to push his centre-backs high.

“At Celtic he ensured the defenders played with a high-line, which Maguire does not like to do.

“Maguire is a decent player and can succeed if he leaves Man United, but Postecoglou likes to play with two-centre backs instead of three, which means I don’t think Maguire is the right fit.”
