Tottenham player ratings in loss v West Ham – Fringe trio disappoint with 5/10

COMMENT by Russell Edge

Tottenham fans will be devastated after seeing their side throw away a 2-0 lead to succumb to defeat to West Ham in their League Cup clash on Wednesday.

First half goals from Moussa Sissoko and Dele Alli appeared to give Spurs a comfortable lead at Wembley, with West Ham rarely threatening the Lilywhites’ defence.

However it all changed in the second half, with an Andre Ayew double and an Angelo Ogbonna header turning the match on its head and sending the Hammers, rather than four time winners Spurs, through to the last eight.

So how did the Tottenham players get on against the Reds?

Here, Football Insider has ranked each of the club’s stars, including two fringe stars who failed to impress with 5/10 performances:

Michel Vorm – 5 – After Hugo Lloris’ bright performance against Liverpool, Wednesday proved what a difference a top class goalkeeper can make. Vorm was not his regular, reliable self and it cost Tottenham against the Hammers.

Juan Foyth- 5 – The youngster was making just his second appearance for the club and let it show. His mistake led to West Ham’s equaliser, and was shaky throughout.

Toby Alderweireld – 5 – Not his usual domineering performance by any standards. Was the sole survivor in defence from the Liverpool clash and looked to struggle without Sanchez and Vertonghen joining him.

Ben Davies – 6 – Welcomed back into the starting XI after illness, albeit in a central role rather than at left back. A bright first half, which was comfortable for all of Spurs’ players, was offset by a disappointing second.

Kieran Trippier – 6 – Looked energetic as per usual down the right flank, but was caught out in the box by Ogbonna for the visitors’ winner.

Danny Rose – 6 – Back into the first team after his major injury layoff, he committed himself without any worries, which was a positive to see. Energetic and earned himself a good run out.

Moussa Sissoko – 8 – A bright spot for Tottenham, netting their first, and his second in a Spurs shirt, after just six minutes. His energy was crucial and was unlucky not to score again. Starting to live up to his price tag.

Eric Dier – 7 – As usual, his performance went mostly under the radar, but dominated in the first half. His second half outing was less impressive and then dropped into a centre back role as the game went on

Dele Alli – 7 – After some disappointing displays Dele is starting to rediscover his best form. Was always in the right place at the right time and could quite possibly has had a hat trick had it not been for Adrian in nets.

Heung-min Son – 6 – Other than setting up Sissoko did not really offer much to the team, especially moving into the second half. Defensively very poor, which was a major factor in defeat.

Fernando Llorente – 5 – Another start, another day questioning what he offered to the side. His hold up play was poor, did not offer a focal point in attack and really just did not give the rest of his team mates what they needed.

Substitutes:

Mousa Dembele – 5 – Back after his injury layoff, he did not affect the outcome of the match in any way despite having 20 minutes to make a change.

Christian Eriksen – 6 – Brought on to try and instigate a change, he could not create the opportunities which would have been expected from a player of his calibre.

Georges-Kevin N’Koudou – 5 – Given just under 10 minutes to have an impact, did more to harm his side’s chances of success than anything, wasting possession with his poor crossing.
