Trent Alexander-Arnold cited as Tottenham submit £19m sensation bid – expert

Trent Alexander-Arnold has shown the importance of the modern full-back and Djed Spence may be the “answer” for Tottenham, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed Spence would be following Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton in a rich tradition of young Spurs right-backs.

A recruitment source told Football Insider last week (29 June) that Tottenham and Middlesbrough are now just £1million apart in their valuations of the 21-year-old.

Football Insider reported the same day that Atletico Madrid had submitted a bid for Emerson Royal who Spurs value at £20million and would be willing to let go.

Asked for his verdict on the situation, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “They need a right-back Spurs.

“If you look at the game, wing-backs and full-backs are one the most important players.

“You look at Trent Alexander-Arnold, you look at even Matty Cash and Lucas Digne at Aston Villa.

“Emerson Royal is not good enough, Spence looks like a promising player who might be the answer. Spurs won’t want to pay over the odds.

“He’s a Spurs-type player. Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton were players that Spurs bought a lot of years ago, who were young up-and-coming right-backs. That’s what Spurs like to do.”

Spence came to prominence in the 2021-22 campaign as a key part of the Nottingham Forest side that won promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs.

The England Under-21 international was on loan from Boro and has two years left to run on his contract at the Riverside.
