‘Very clever’ Levy’s latest Tottenham move makes ‘absolute sense’
Kevin Phillips understands why Tottenham chief Daniel Levy has been appointed to the European Club Association board.
The Sunderland legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims his role in the Harry Kane saga proved Levy is the man for the job.
As confirmed on 7 September, Levy has been voted onto the executive board of the ECA ahead of Manchester City CEO Ferran Soriano.
The Spurs chairman replaces Manchester United’s Ed Woodward in the influential role months after the debacle of the European Super League.
Levy reportedly won the race to the position following support from Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.
Phillips insists the move makes sense and hailed Levy’s business acumen.
“He is a very clever businessman,” Phillips told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.
“We saw that with the Kane situation this summer. He stood his ground and he came out on top.
“They have looked at him and they know he is a good businessman, which is good for him.
“He has experience. He was criticised for the Super League stuff but I don’t think the people who voted for him will care.
“They need to make sure he makes decisions in the best interests of football rather than for a financial benefit.
“He’s a well-known figure and the move makes absolute sense to me.”

Levy came in for much criticism after the collapse of the proposed European Super League earlier this year.
The Spurs chief was labelled as an architect of the failed break-away.
