‘Huddersfield are interested’ – Pundit Exclusive: Celtic in fight to keep senior star

Noel Whelan insists that Celtic will “need” to re-sign Craig Gordon if they cannot do a deal for Fraser Forster this summer.

The former Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, claims the club need to do “a lot of talking” to figure out where they stand in terms of their goalkeeping options.

As revealed by Football Insider, Celtic are willing to up their initial contract offer to re-sign Gordon, 37, this summer but will not go as far as his old £20,000-a-week deal.

The shot-stopper, who is currently a free agent, went public over his contract situation earlier this week, confirming that the Hoops would need to improve their offer if he was to sign a new deal at Parkhead.

Whelan believes that the Hoops face a battle in trying to get Gordon back on board but insists his experience will be needed if they fail to sign Forster from Southampton.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I think that they’re going to have to hold fire right now, Celtic, to see where these decisions are going to be made.

“We know Huddersfield are interested in Craig Gordon as well, Hearts again. Big decisions to be made by players at the clubs and what’s more important to them.

“Are they comfortable where they are at Celtic – a fantastic football club, massive, always going to be playing in Europe, always going to be challenging for cups and the Premiership title.

“There’s a lot to be thought about for club and players. Their season has finished but there needs to be a lot of talking done by the club to see where they’re at. If they can’t get Fraser Forster, they’re going to need Gordon.”

Gordon played just six times for Celtic this season, with Southampton loanee Forster Neil Lennon’s first choice between the sticks.

The Scottish stopper has a total of 242 appearances under his belt for the Bhoys.

In other Celtic news, a young Bhoy has been tipped to be making a huge impact in the dressing room.
