Moyes makes honest admission after controversial penalty in West Ham v Stoke clash

West Ham United manager David Moyes has defended Manuel Lanzini, after the player was accused of diving during his side’s 3-0 win at Stoke.

The Hammers were awarded a controversial first-half penalty, which was scored by Mark Noble, after Lanzini went down in the box. The player rode three challenges before going down in the box under a tackle from defender Erik Pieters.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes accused Lanzini of diving and described him as a “clever player” during his post-match interview.

However, Hammers boss Moyes has defended the playmaker and believes his actions were as result of tiredness rather than a deliberate attempt to con the referee.

However, Moyes did admit that he would be disappointed if a like that decision was given against his side.

“The defender gave the referee a decision to make,” Moyes told BBC Sport in his post-match interview.

“Manuel Lanzini ran about 70 yards so I think he went over with fatigue rather than a dive. I’d be disappointed to give away a penalty like that but sometimes that’s the way it goes.”

After Noble had put them ahead, two second-half goals from Marko Arnautovic and Diafra Sakho helped the Hammers to a comfortable victory.

Moyes’ side are now unbeaten in their last three matches and have also kept three consecutive clean sheets.

The victory sees West Ham climb out of the bottom three at the expense of Newcastle United, who were beaten 1-0 by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
