West Ham news: Pundit issues ‘devastated’ verdict as crushing Jarrod Bowen blow reported

West Ham have been dealt a “devastating” blow after a crushing update on Jarrod Bowen’s injury problem, according to Noel Whelan.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Hammers will be weakened significantly in the 25-year-old’s absence.

According to The Athletic (21 March), Bowen’s injury is “worse than first feared” – with the forward suffering a fractured bone in his foot.

The report claims West Ham now face a race against time to get the former Hull man fit for their crucial Europa League tie against Lyon next month.

Bowen limped off against Liverpool on 5 March – but the Hammers initially claimed he had suffered “no significant damage” via club media.

Whelan suggested the injury has cost the 25-year-old a maiden England call-up.

“It’s devastating,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s been remarkable this season and must have been so close to an England call-up. If he was fit then I’m certain he would have been in the squad.

“He’s been that consistent for West Ham this season, and he’s been a real standout.

“The work rate he puts in and the quality he can produce inside that 18-yard box is incredible.

“He’s one of these players that really weakens your side when you’re without them.”

Bowen has netted 12 goals and notched 11 assists in 39 West Ham appearances this term.

The Irons have slipped to seventh in the Premier League following yesterday’s (20 March) 3-1 loss away at Tottenham.
