Kenny ‘surprised’ as West Ham open talks on ‘strange’ new appointment
West Ham must be careful not to take full control of recruitment away from David Moyes.
That is according to ex-Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively after Football Insider revealed that West Ham are in talks to hire a new director of football.
The search is being carried out at the behest of Moyes who is on the cusp of signing a new contract at the London Stadium.
Robbie Cooke, who worked with Moyes at Man United, Everton and Preston, is among those being targeted for the position.
The 2020-21 campaign was a riotous success for West Ham off the back of Moyes signing the likes of Thomas Soucek, Jarrod Bowen and Vladimir Coufal.
And Kenny is concerned that ceding any control of transfer business could be a misstep from the 58-year-old manager.
He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “I think there’s a danger of that it takes control away from him.
“It’s a strange one but if Moyes has sanctioned it then obviously he’s happy with the arrangement.
“I’m surprised he’s wanted to go that way after what he’s done at West Ham this season and the players he’s brought in. Lingard came in and was unbelievable, so was Soucek.
“So this could backfire. Whatever happens, it’s going to be tough for them to achieve what they achieved last season.”
Kenwright wanted to appoint Moyes after Marco Silva was sacked in 2019.
