West Brom will be doing some very smart business by tying Matheus Pereira to a new and improved contract.

That is according to ex-Tottenham and Man City midfielder Michael Brown, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge about the Brazilian playmaker.

Brown hailed Pereira as a “great talent” who brings an added dimension to Slaven Bilic’s relegation-threatened side.

As revealed by Football Insider, Pereira has agreed in principle a new and improved West Brom deal which is understood to be worth £45,000-a-week.

The £12m-valued contract is yet to be announced but it is expected to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

Brown told Football Insider: “He’s got a great talent, hasn’t he, for what he offers and what he brings to that side.

“I’m not sure how long he’s actually got left to be honest but he’ll be one they want to continue the journey with, for sure. The Premier League is another level.”

It comes just two months after Pereira joined the Premier League side permanently for £8m on the back of his outstanding 2019-20 loan from Sporting Lisbon.

Pereira signed a four-year contract over the summer but West Brom are set to add a further 12 months to that agreement as well as a pay rise.

The Brazilian was outstanding last season, when his 42 Championship appearances yielded a remarkable eight goals and 20 assists – more than any other player in the league.

Pereira has featured in seven of West Brom’s eight Premier League matches this season, scoring once – against Everton – as well as supplying two assists.

He missed last Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Tottenham after testing positive for Covid-19.

In other news, West Brom are working on a deal to sign contract-rebel defender wanted by West Ham.
