Whelan claims Fonseca is walking into the hardest job in England after Tottenham update

Noel Whelan insists Paulo Fonseca is walking into the toughest job in England if he takes over at Tottenham.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claims the size of the job at Spurs is what stopped several other managers taking the job.

As reported by reputable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Wednesday (June 16th), Fonseca has agreed terms to join Tottenham with the club preparing an announcement.

Tottenham have been without a manager since they sacked Jose Mourinho in April.

Fonseca left Roma last season and was subsequently replaced by Mourinho.

Whelan insists factors such as the uncertainty over Harry Kane’s future and the lack of Champions League football at the club make Fonseca’s job extremely hard.

When asked if Fonseca is walking into the hardest job in England, Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, “Yeah, absolutely.

“It’s a huge job for someone to take on right now. Knowing big players could leave and knowing you can’t challenge.

“Not many managers will take this job, as we’ve seen. You are going to lose the best striker in the world and you have no money to spend.

“You also have a fine that needs to be paid for the Super League breakaway as well. Tottenham are miles off the other top clubs in the country.

“That’s why they have failed to appoint a world-renowned manager. It’s not looking rosy at Tottenham.

“If they aren’t in the Champions League next season, they will fall even further. Is Fonseca going to be able to attract those top players without having the Champions League?

“I don’t think so. Fonseca has a huge job on his hands.”
